Janey Schwind (Martinsen) is proud to be the Executive Director of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra. Janey has performed with the ASO since 2019 and has served as Personnel Manager and Music Librarian for the orchestra since December 2020.
Prior to this appointment, Janey served as Director of Bands at Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School from 2016-2021. At HAJHS, Janey directed three grade-level concert bands, two jazz bands, a select wind ensemble, and beginner marching band. She also served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School from 2016-2019.
With a passion for private teaching, Janey has also maintained a clarinet studio of students, ranging from ages 9 to 65. Her students have had great success in PMEA District, Region, and All-State ensemble festivals, The Triolo Competition, Penn State Honors Music Institute, the Tanglewood Music Festival, Walnut Hill High School for the Arts, the Penn State School of Music, and Northwestern University. She has also given masterclasses throughout the area for elementary, middle, and high school clarinetists.
Janey is an avid solo, chamber, and ensemble clarinetist, with a special interest in E-flat clarinet. While at Penn State, Janey was a member of the Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, The Penn State Blue Band, and Quintessential, the Graduate Woodwind Quintet. She has also performed with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, The Kent Singers, and the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra. She has performed in prestigious venues including The Kimmel Center, The Strathmore Music Center, Alice Tulley Hall at Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. She has performed for several internationally renowned clarinetists including Larry Guy, David Shifrin, and Principal Clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Wenzel Fuchs. Janey has also programmed and performed numerous solo and chamber recitals throughout her career.
Janey is a 2012 and 2015 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with degrees in Music Education, a certificate in Clarinet Performance and a Masters in Clarinet Performance. She has studied with Smith Toulson and Anthony Costa. She is a member of the International Clarinet Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education. Janey is an Adjunct Instructor of Music at Penn State University Altoona Campus.
Aside from her musical life, Janey enjoys running, visiting friends, cooking, reading, traveling, decorating her home, and spending time with her husband, her family, and her golden retriever, Riff.
