Introducing Music Director, Teresa Cheung!
The Altoona Symphony Society, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Teresa Cheung as our
11th Music Director! She will begin her tenure with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra (ASO) July 1,
2008. You will have the opportunity to meet Ms. Cheung on Saturday August 30, 2008, at 6pm at
Canal Basin Park. The concert, entitled "Labor of Love", will be offered free to the public and
will kick off the ASO’s 80th season. In Cheung’s letter of application she is quoted as saying,
"My responsibility as music director is to facilitate ideas and to commit to the highest artistic
standards possible in the presentation of quality music. Regardless of the types of concert
events we present, audiences should leave the concert hall with newfound curiosity and appreciation
for the music." Teresa Cheung was one of four finalists who conducted a classical series concert
during the 07-08 season. Audience and musician evaluation forms were distributed at all four
concerts. Taking these forms into consideration, along with Ms. Cheung's strong credentials
the search committee unanimously voted on behalf of Teresa Cheung to usher the Altoona Symphony
Orchestra into our 80th Season!
In Fall 2001, the ASO was mentioned in Symphony Magazine as a "Leading
U.S. Small Community Symphony" by the American Symphony Orchestra League.
In 1999, the ASO was mentioned in Fanfare Magazine - "Stories about the
decline of classical music in America are confounded by...live performances by a...
70-piece orchestra from Central Pennsylvania, playing with a confidence...once...
unimaginable outside a major metropolis."
