Written in 1880, 1887 & 1883 respectively ...
all three 19th Century pieces have been created through special inspirations of their composers.
- Max Bruch's Opus #47 was inspired by two Jewish prayers (one being the Yom Kippur prayer "Kol Nidre") shortly after taking over as Principal Conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It was composed specifically for Liverpool’s Jewish community.
- Peter Tchaikovsky's "Mozartiana" was composed as a tribute or ode to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. Tchaikovsky, who regarded Mozart as a "musical God" conducted the premiere himself, in Moscow in November 1887.
- Johannes Brahm's Symphony #3 draws its creative spark from -listen to this- (-; Being a 50-year-old bachelor, Brahms declared himself to be Frei aber Froh, "Free but Happy". This F–A–F motto, and some altered variations of it, can be heard throughout Opus #90.

Noteworthy about last Saturday's Concert (maybe also since the two pieces were separated by Intermission), is that Tchaikovsky and Brahms for many years preferred dissing each other's music ... rather than paying mutual respect.
At their core they just were very different personalities !
Tchaikovsky was Russian, of noble birth, soft-spoken, and shy. Put in a uniform he could be passed off as the Zar almost ...
Brahms on the other hand was German, born into poverty ... and frequently acting exuberant and crass. His picture at top clearly shows him more "folksy"-looking than the almost stern and formal Tchaikovsky.
But thanks to a chance-meeting in late 1887 ... and maybe also the wisdom -and mellowing- of age, Tchaikovsky and Brahms did come to acknowledge the respective other in civil, if not positive ways.

March 16th Concert featured the ASO's very own Principal Cello, Kim Cook ... "A graduate of Yale and the University of Illinois, Cook studied with Gabriel Magyar, Aldo Parisot, Alan Harris, and Janos Starker. She was Principal Cellist of the São Paulo Symphony under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, and taught at New Mexico State prior to her position as Distinguished Professor of Cello at Penn State, where she has served for 28 years.
